Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP therapy is one of the most cutting edge modalities of medicine and with good reason, as you will soon read about. Here with RENEWU, we are proud to offer these cutting edge, minimally invasive PRP therapies, individualized for our patients needs.

Although it was first discovered and applied in 1987 by Dr. Ferrari, PRP therapies were considered a “voo-doo” medical treatment until more recently, whereas physicians and medical researchers have discovered the wonderful benefits of these platelet rich plasma therapies.

One of the benefits of PRP therapies is that it is considered an autologous therapy. This means we use the bodies’ own natural components from an adult individual, for use by the same individual. RENEWU, is proud to offer this natural, non-invasive, alternative to surgery therapy to all of its patients!

At RENEWU, we provide informative consulting and treatments related to clinical research and deployment of PRP for patients suffering from diseases that may have limited treatment options. PRP therapy is not for everyone, but under the right circumstances and under the right conditions, there may be an opportunity for PRP therapy to be effective at improving ones quality of life.

PRP therapy is becoming a more popular option for patients who continue to struggle with more conventional based therapies; whereas, PRP gives a natural, non-invasive, boost to the healing process. PRP treatments have received significant attention from the media and have been successfully utilized by many athletes, celebrities, and the wealthy. This treatment, once only available to the rich and famous is now readily available to you! Without breaking the Bank! PRP is a great mechanism to help an acute injury but also works very well for chronic conditions.

Because we are committed to the principles and ideals of regenerative medicine, we are continuously updating, researching, and learning more on how to help patients and advance regenerative medicine. Accordingly, we provide all patients who are interested in considering PRP therapy an honest opinion as to the potential benefits of PRP therapy for their presenting condition.

This guide aims to provide additional information and an un-bias description on the use, indications, and potential outcomes of PRP therapy. Any additional questions, or to find out if you are a candidate, please call our office.

What Can PRP Therapy be used for?

There are now over 5200 entries in the NCBI for PRP ranging in fields from orthopedics, Sports medicine, dentistry, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, urology, wound healing, cosmetic, cardiothoracic and maxillofacial surgery. PRP aims to help trigger and attract Stem Cells, lower inflammation, help repair muscle, tendon, and ligaments, help collagen growth, improve circulation and many other things. PRP has a broad array of conditions that it can be helpful for. It can help improve your sore knees, re-grow collagen in your face, ease up the golfers elbow, improve varicose veins, take away fine lines and wrinkles, help improve your sex life, and many many more! PRP is produced from a person’s own blood (Autologous). PRP is a concentration of one type of blood cell, known as platelets, which already exist in our body and circulate through the blood. These Platelets are what are critical and responsible for blood clotting. Platelets and the liquid plasma portion of the blood contain many factors that are essential for the cell recruitment, multiplication and specialization that are required for healing.

Synthesis of Collagen (dermal thickening and wrinkle reduction)

  • Neovascularization / Formation of new blood vessels (skin’s rosy glow)
  • Stimulation of fat growth (improved volume under the skin)
  • Synthesis of Keratinocytes (new skin cells) Enhancement of Smooth Muscle (improved tone)

Why Explore Alternative Healthcare/Naturopathic Options for our Health?

Our bodies are amazingly complex pieces of science. There are millions of reactions that happen every second inside our bodies without us even being consciously aware of them. This is why, that if we place our bodies in a healthy environment, that our bodies can take care or even heal themselves! The healthcare in this country is quick to push medications and surgery. But these types of things often come with many negative side effects, the need for anesthesia, and the potential for the condition to recur or even worsen! Alternative healthcare aims to use our own bodies’ natural healing capabilities, to stop the progression of a condition from getting worse, or in some cases, aid, or heal the medical condition. Utilizing these natural therapies ensures that there are no side effects or long-term complications. The worse thing that can happen with a PRP treatment is that nothing happens. Your body cannot have any negative reactions to something that came from inside of you! These types of treatments are entirely an autologous procedure, meaning the treatment stems from components already inside your own body.

Thus, eliminating the concern for disease transmission, rejection, or negative side effects! help attract Stem Cells!

Why should we use Blood to help Improve our health?

The initial popularity of PRP grew from its promise as a safe and natural alternative to surgery. PRP advocates promoted the procedure as an organically based therapy that enabled healing through the use of one’s own natural growth factors. PRP therapies utilize cells that already exist in our bodies. PRP as its name describes, utilizes, Platelets, which exist in our blood naturally. Platelets are the blood cells that our bodies utilize to form clots (a cellular patch to stop bleeding). It turns out, that once these platelets are activated, they release many different, growth proteins, growth factors, anti- inflammatory factors, and special chemicals to the body

In recent years, scientific research and technology has provided a new perspective on platelets. Studies suggest that platelets contain an abundance of growth factors and cytokines (chemical signalers) that can affect inflammation, promote stem cells, eliminate infection, re-grow bone cells, aid in wound healing, aid in muscle restructuring and soft tissue healing. Research now shows that platelets also release many bioactive proteins responsible for attracting immune cells, mesenchymal stem cells and osteoblasts (bone promoting cells). These properties ultimately help promote removal of degenerated and dead tissue, and also enhance tissue regeneration and healing. PRP is a concentrated source of growth factors and cellular signaling factors that play a significant role in the biology of healing.

What is a PRP Treatment and what does the PRP Treatment Entail?

 1) Establish as a patient at our functional medicine office

2) Complete a complimentary in-depth consultation with our medical team to receive a preliminary candidacy decision

 3) If the medical team deems you are a good candidate, then further diagnostic assessment, prior medical records, and pre surgical studies are gathered to make final determination if you are a suitable candidate for our PRP Therapy

 4) If our medical team deems you a candidate to complete our PRP Therapy, than

Procedure options are discussed and a procedure date is scheduled If a procedure is to take place, the process itself is extremely non-invasive and can be completed without anesthesia, and in under an hour, whereas you are completely capable of going right back to your normal activity.

The procedure itself starts with a simple blood collection, as this is the basis of the whole procedure. This is not different than if you were to have blood drawn for blood-work in your normal physicians assessment. Once enough blood is collected, the patient is brought to a recovery room and waits for the PRP to be processed.

The blood collected, is sent through a special processing, using nothing but natural components to help activate and enhance the PRP solution. Once the PRP solution is enhanced and active, it is distributed back to the patient, depending on what purpose the treatment is being conducted for.

Once activation has occurred at the injection site, release of growth factors initiates an inflammatory response that lasts approximately 3 days. Fibroblasts (Immune Cells) accumulate at the site of injection, which marks the beginning of the proliferative phase of healing that lasts several weeks. After that, remodeling occurs to the collagen matrix (natural framework) that was laid down by the fibroblasts. It is this remodeling phase that leads to the formation of mature tissue over the next 6 months. It takes all three phases for new tissue to form and provide long‐term stability to tissue.

1) Monitor for post‐procedure complications, swelling, redness, and signs of infection

 2) Patients are given post‐procedure instructions, precautions, and emergency contact information

 3) Depending on the indications for the treatment, will determine the post procedure limitations that a patient may expect

 4) It is IMPERATIVE to Avoid NSAIDs or any other anti-inflammatory medication, vitamin, supplement, herb, or modality until the medical provider instructs you otherwise. Because PRP is given in the hopes of optimizing the initial inflammatory response of healing, anti-inflammatory medications should likely be stopped at the time of PRP treatment

5) Patients also are advised to minimize their physical activity to 50% for several days after the treatment in order to maximize the result

1) Patients are generally re‐examined 2‐6 weeks after the procedure to follow up in regards to pain, function, injection site observation and to discuss concerns and future course.

 2) Consideration for re‐injection should be a patient centered decision and made based on

Functional outcome. We do not endorse a specific number of injections at any site.

What are the Outcomes and Results with a PRP Treatment and what should I Expect?

The FDA and DEA strictly govern the use and administration of PRP in the US because it is an investigational therapy. Although PRP Treatments have been utilized abroad for over a decade, the US limits what, how, and why we use PRP in humans. PRP therapies, because of strict legislation have not been studied to the full capacity, as they should be. Here at RENEWU, we adhere and comply fully with all FDA regulations. Therefore, we can never make any claims of curing any disease process. However, we have seen tremendous functional improvements with people’s health, longevity, and quality of life.

At RENEWU we are involved with the Investigational use of Autologous PRP for clinical research and deployment. RENEWU is offering patient-funded research to treat individuals with autologous (their own) PRP and are not involved in the use or manufacturing of any investigational drugs or devices. We are not offering PRP therapy as a cure for any condition, disease, or injury. No statements or treatments on this website have been evaluated or approved by the FDA. This manual contains no medical advice. All statements and opinions on this manual are provided for educational and informational purposes only. We do not diagnose or treat via this manual or via telephone. RENEWU does not claim that any applications, or potential applications, using autologous adult PRP treatments are approved by the FDA, or are even effective.

We do not claim that these treatments work for any listed nor unlisted condition, intended or implied. It is important for potential patients to do their own research based on the options that we present so they can make informed decisions. Any decision to participate in our patient-funded experimental protocols is completely voluntary.

That being said, it is important to understand how amazingly complex our bodies and these treatments are. It is for this reason that different cases, lifestyles, severity of the condition, and other factors can make it difficult to give justifiable and quantitative evidence of outcomes. People often ask us, what our success is? Success is very relative, and what one considers successful might not met the success criteria of another. Although we cannot claim that a PRP treatment will cure your condition, we have experience in treating over 50 conditions with people ravishing about how much better they are doing. Some physicians make the claim that these types of treatments yield a 93% functional improvement in peoples lives. Several basic science studies in animal models suggest that PRP treatment can improve healing in soft tissue and bone. For example, increased numbers of cells and improved tendon strength have been noted in Achilles tendon injuries, and improved muscle regeneration has been shown in gastrocnemius (calf) muscle injuries.

These favorable findings in animal models have led to the widespread use of PRP treatment for a variety of conditions, including acute and chronic tendon problems, as well as injuries to ligaments and muscles in humans. Some early-stage clinical studies in humans have been promising, but are limited by their study design and few patients.

The most promising early results have been seen when PRP treatment is used for chronic tendon conditions, such as lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) and Achilles tendinosis, which impacts the Achilles tendon. Nonetheless, a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that there was no advantage to using PRP injection compared to saline (placebo) injection for the treatment of Achilles tendinosis.

In a small study involving knee osteoarthritis, PRP treatment was shown to be more effective than hyaluronic acid treatment (Synvisc, orthovisc) and corticosteroid treatment. PRP has also resulted in positive or similar results when used in the treatment of rotator cuff tears and medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries in the knee.

Overall, there is limited support of PRP treatment in published clinical studies. However, because PRP is created from a patient’s own blood, it is considered a relatively low-risk treatment with the potential to improve or speed healing.

More studies are needed to prove the effectiveness of PRP treatment and to research the best ways to standardize the treatment’s preparation.

What are my PRP Treatment Options? Here at RENEWU, we have developed

specific PRP programs to yield our patients the outcomes they are looking for.
